The house of the spirits is a book that contains many supernatural events. Throughout this book it is easy to see that there is a political battle going on. There are many elements that are seen which include religion, marriage and family. The author's story and the historical events that happened at the time had a huge impact on the book and the way it was written. Many cultural influences also influenced the book. At the beginning of the book The House of the Spirits, Uncle Marcos arrives at the inhabitants of Del Valle but is not alive. Along with Uncle Marcos' corpse is Barrabás, his dog. Clara loved Barrabás very much. Nivea was the mother of 15 children and only 11 survived and are still alive. Clara is the youngest daughter. Clara has these types of "powers" and is able to communicate with the supernatural. He is able to make the tables move and predict the future. The eldest daughter, Rosa, is known for being the most beautiful girl around. Everyone envies her. Rosa's boyfriend, Esteban Trueba, works in the mines in the north and doesn't see Rosa much. In an accidental poisoning intended for her father, Severo del Valle, Rosa consumes the poison and dies. Clara is stunned by the events which silence her. He doesn't talk to anyone at all. Clara has a vision that she will marry Esteban and nine years later she begins to speak and marries Esteban. Then they move to a small, very run-down town. Esteban does what he can to fix the city. He completely restores the city and makes a good living. He is considered the "Patron Saint" of the city. Esteban sexually abuses many of the younger children in the village. One of them is Pancha who is seen throughout the story. Ferul......middle of paper......a conflict between the two throughout the story. During the time the book was written, a major conflict occurred between two opposing sides in real life. “Liberals fought for fair treatment of all classes and for equality among people. It was a time when the rich became richer at the expense of the poor, and the poor and working class were unwilling to endure any more. It was a time of revolution. The conservatives saw the revolutionaries as tyrants and fought them at every opportunity” (Allende). Latin American culture is also shown with many political references. Also, at the beginning of the book the scene is set in a Catholic church. The Catholic religion was an important part of Chilean culture and all people had some sort of belief. Chilean culture also believes that there is a belief that goes beyond the belief in visible existence (Allende).
