Several studies have shown that many forms of social media are often overused and can be addictive (social media addiction). In a 2014 study conducted by the University at Albany, SUNY (McGrath), approximately 10% of respondents reported disordered social media use. Another study found that “disordered use of online social networks was present in 9.7% of the sample interviewed and was significantly and positively associated with Young Internet Addiction Test scores, greater difficulties in emotion regulation and problem of alcohol consumption” (Hormes). The likelihood that a person with an addictive personality will develop an addiction to social media is particularly high because these people most likely possess a “symptom set of poor emotion regulation skills and an increased susceptibility to substance and non-substance addiction” (Hormes) . Compulsive use of social media sites can cause “the same kind of changes in people's brains that drug addiction causes” (Social Media Addiction). There are many examples of people becoming addicted to social media, like a 15-year-old social media addict named Krishnan (name changed) who spent almost 16 hours a day on Facebook (Warning).
