India is one of the largest producers of horticultural crops in the world. However, India lags far behind countries like China and the US in yield per hectare and stores only 2% of its production under temperature-controlled conditions. This is because the country has adequate capacity to store ten percent of its yield. Of the total products, 30-40% is wasted before consumption due to inadequacies in the supply chain. Cold storage in India has been widely adopted for long-term storage of potatoes, onions and high-value crops such as apples, grapes and flowers. 75% of the cold room capacity is used to store potatoes, while only 23% falls into the multi-product category.
