“Cancer is a disease that will come after you, your family, your job and every aspect of your life.” It is the second leading cause of death in the United States and is directly associated with obesity. In fact, one in three women, and half of men, will develop cancer in their lifetime. Cancer attacks your health, attitude and confidence with a variety of chemicals, tests, treatments and paperwork. Fortunately, we were able to find a cure for my father. On July 3, 2007, my father's doctor came to our house at five in the morning, to give us the devastating news about my father; has multiple myeloma. This is a painful cancer in which abnormal cells, plasma cells, predominate in the bone marrow. My parents came into my room, woke up my sister and me, and spoke to us in a low, monotone voice. They told us that dad will be fine, but he is very ill. Unfortunately their faces scared us more than their words. He subsequently underwent extensive testing, radiotherapy and then chemotherapy. This went on for seven months and only a slight change occurred. The doctors then decided to try stem cell transplantation. They took stem cells from the neostar, which ranged from the left side of the chest, around the collarbone and into the heart. They then extracted stem cells from his heart. The stem cells would then be stored in DMSO, until the powerful doses of chemo killed the cancer cells, red blood cells and white plaques. Then they would give him injections, with the stem cells collected in his back. Many people...... middle of paper...... Cancer.Net. Np, 10 September 2009.
