Topic > Surrealist Movement: Altering Reality in Works of Art

Because altering reality can be created in so many different forms, artists of the early 20th century altered reality into magnificent works of art. Artists are able to physically alter our reality and the way we perceive reality through the manipulation of visual language; tell the unspeakable, talk about the unspeakable and transfer the viewer into a mythical and imaginable universe where anything can happen. They created a way to escape the real world, a place where the audience can relax and feel at peace. Two amazing and famous reality-altering artists are Salvador Dali and Alex Andreev. Dali's famous surrealist artworks appeared in the late 1920s and are iconic for this period. Dora Ades said of Dali's works: "Surrealism holds the idea that ordinary, representative expressions are vital and important, but that the sense of their arrangement must be open to the full range of the imagination." (Ades, D. 2001 p. 35) Andreev's artworks are a contemporary twist on surrealism and are contrasting, bright and energetic. Both manage to alter reality by physically and mentally manipulating the audience's reality using out of place objects, physically impossible themes and intriguing ideas. After World War I people longed for something to ease their minds from the pain, suffering and reality of war. The Surrealist movement intended to create art; literature and philosophy that calmed the soul and helped them forget or alter the reality in which they lived. There were also developments in the study of the human mind by Sigmund Freud which opened up ideas about the imagination, which inspired many artists such as Dali. Salvador Dali's works alter reality through illusion. This technology… medium of paper… manipulates the audience's thoughts and involves them in the artist's altered reality. Dali said, "[Man] has only to imagine to break through the walls and cause all planetary events." The Baghdad of his dreams rises from the dust and destroys the chains that limit our vision.
