Argumentative Essay OutlineI. IntroductionAfter the shocking massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, people nationwide were focused on the gun control debate. Statistics from “Poll: Support for Stricter Gun Controls Ebbs” published by the Wall Street Journal show that more than half of people support stricter gun controls. President Obama recently announced 23 major executions in his “Now is the Time” speech to prevent further gun violence. Despite people's concern, articles such as "One year after Newtown, Congress still deadlocked on gun control" from CBS news show that Congress had been reluctant to pass such regulations. Congress has rejected most of President Obama's recommended executions, but these are the methods that should be evaluated when talking about reducing gun violence. Each year, an estimated 30,000 people die due to gun violence. If our country had adopted stricter gun laws, the number would have been much lower.II. Body paragraph one • Over the past decade, there have been 120,000 gun-related homicides in the United States; “from 1990 to 2005, two-thirds of spouse and ex-spouse homicide victims were killed by firearms”; From 1976 to 2005, 77 percent of homicide victims ages 15 to 17 died from gunshot wounds. (According to statistics in In Gun Debate, a Misguided Focus on Mental Illness.) • After the shocking murder at Sandy Hook Elementary School, 61% of people supported more aggressive gun laws (Poll: Support for stricter gun controls decreasing.) • But as time passed, support dropped to 52%. People should really be aware of the consequences of such loose regulation of gun laws. Every year, tens of thousands of people who... middle of paper ......who were used in self-defense were probably trying to protect themselves from a person who was trying to harm them with another gun. • Others may say you need a gun to protect yourself. But if there were enough policies, which is the new policy included in gun control, and people had the knowledge and responsibility for using guns, why would you need a gun to protect yourself? Conclusion Firearms pose a high danger in the world, especially in the United States due to the lack of strict gun control laws. While weapons have their positive values, they are not enough to balance the risks. Congress should make progress on regulating gun access. And people should have basic knowledge and responsibility about using weapons. This way we would surely be able to reduce gun violence and prevent tragedies from happening again and again.
