The character I chose to analyze who has PTSD is Spartacus, played by Andy Whitfield in the hit series Spartacus Blood and Sand on Starz. Spartacus Blood and Sand is directed by Grady Hall and Rick Jacobson. Spartacus is a Thracian soldier punished for his betrayal against the Roman commander Legatus Claudius Glaber, played by Craig Parker. Spartacus was to be executed in the gladiatorial games and his wife Sura, played by Erin Cummings, was to be sold into slavery. However, Spartacus successfully defended his life by killing four top-notch gladiators in the arena. After his victory he was purchased by Baticitus, played by John Hannah. Spartacus must have been a slave trained to become a gladiator in the ludus of Baticitus. When Spartacus began to bring great fortunes from his winnings and social advancement to the ludus of Baticitus, he was promised that he would be reunited with his wife, Sura. After Spartacus became champion of Capua and remained undefeated, he realized that Baticitus would not keep his promise to reunite him with his wife because too many victories had passed. Spartacus later discovered in a recurring flashback and present-day images that Baticitus had killed Spartacus' wife Sura. An analysis of Spartacus' behavior of nightmares, insomnia, and disturbing memories reveals that Spartacus is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. The first behavior that shows that Spartacus has PTSD is the nightmare of not being reunited with his wife. Most of his nightmares involved his wife being by his side during these trials and her giving him advice on how to survive and how to reunite again. His nightmares seemed like prophecies or warnings about what was to come... middle of paper... a person feels so overwhelmed, exhausted, and overworked that treatments for PSTD range from complex psychobiological features that make therapy difficult . The three weapons of treatment are patient education, pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy (Cabaltica, 2000). Pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy have been shown to alleviate three clusters of PTSD symptoms: reexperiencing, avoidance, and hypervigilance (Cabaltica, 2000).
