Topic > The Lives of Astronauts - 1471

A person who lives and works in space is an astronaut. Astronauts must be willing to undergo intense training and study in order to keep their jobs. It's a job like no other. “There is no other job in the world that allows you to look down on your planet,” says astronaut Marsha Ivins (Dyson 14). Since most people have never been to space, they can only use pictures and videos to describe it. Astronauts, although they may be looking at the same thing, have a completely different view. They are able to look down on their planet, the moon and the stars. It's amazing. The life of astronauts is adventurous but includes a great deal of hard work because they need specific body requirements, long periods of training and must be physically fit. There are many specific requirements that must be met for people to apply to become astronauts. According to NASA, all people who choose to apply must have a bachelor's degree in engineering, biological sciences, physical sciences or mathematics. Some degrees, although considered math or science, are not eligible. Three years of related work in that grade must be consecutive to qualify (NASA 1). However, there are exceptions to this rule. For example, if a person had a Master's degree, it would eliminate a year of related work. If a person had a doctorate, three years of related work would be eliminated, which is all that is needed (NASA 1). Applicants must also meet specific body requirements. This includes that the applicant's vision must be capable of being corrected to 20/20 and that their blood pressure cannot exceed 140/90 while sitting. Additionally, each position has different height requirements. Finally, all applicants must…half of the paper…include a great deal of hard work. Astronauts have to train for a long time due to the different roles they fill. They must be strong both physically and mentally. There are many differences in lifestyles on the ISS compared to Earth. In addition to how they eat, drink and sleep, astronauts must adjust to separation from family or friends for long periods of time. Astronauts must have a great desire to succeed in their work. Once they start going up, there's no turning back. They must also have great determination to succeed in their work. It takes a lot of determination to get up every day for ascan training. Finally, astronauts must have great dedication to be successful in their jobs. The astronaut's job is very important and all astronauts must want to do what they do. They have to work to be the best they can be.
