A survey of 150,000 students conducted by the Association of American Universities found that more than one in four women experience sexual violence during their four years of college. During their four years of college, 27.2% of female students are victims of unwanted sexual contact ranging from touching to rape (6). Sexual violence is all too common and is an epidemic plaguing many students in college. Many students suffer the consequences of sexual violence, which is the result of many social and cultural shortcomings, but can be resolved through a multifaceted approach. The problem of sexual violence can be solved through community education, a positive and helpful school environment, and lessons focused on prevention. Sexual violence is a problem that affects many university students. Sexual violence is defined as “any unwanted touching” (6) carried out on “an unwilling victim, without consent” (2). This means anything from touching to completed rape. Without consent means that “vigorous efforts were made to avoid sexual contact” (2). The physical symptoms of sexual violence can compromise the victim's quality of life. It can be pelvic pain, migraines and even disability that prevent a victim from working. There are over 32,000 pregnancies per year that are the result of completed rape, but problems with pregnancy can also be the result of sexual assault. In addition to these effects, women who suffer this violence are more likely to contract sexually transmitted diseases (2). Victims of sexual violence include men, women, children, heterosexuals and homosexuals. It can happen to anyone. However, women are the most frequent victims.
