Movements, organizations, and people who use nonviolent strategies are praised and held on higher moral ground. One possible reason why nonviolent strategies are respected is because these strategies make the oppressive community comfortable. However, anything that includes violence is automatically condemned. For example, the recent 2015 “riot” in Baltimore attracted mainstream media attention. News channels continued to show the destruction of buildings in Baltimore, but made little reference to the reasons protesters were angry – living conditions, police brutality, a destroyed education system and other disadvantages that have been occurring for years – and they wanted immediate change. I am in no way advocating violence, I am just pointing out that violence, like the term white supremacy, is too strong for the oppressive structure. This awareness leads marginalized people and their allies to use passive means and terms to gain the attention of the dominant group with the hope of ultimately changing the oppressive system.
