Alcohol abuse among adolescents has become a major problem in the United States and, for this reason, represents a barrier to failure to succeed in college. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, young people under the age of 21 have been reported to drink alcohol, so statistics show that young people between the ages of 12 and 20 drink 11% of all alcohol. 'alcohol ingested in the United States (Author unknown) but there are reasons why young people under 21 consume this substance, including peer pressure, greater independence, the desire to do so, stress, other reasons are family problems such as: divorced parents, sick or deceased family member. The number one cause for a teenager to drink alcohol is peer pressure. What does pressure mean? It is when a person's age group is inspired to do something, whether they like it or not. There are a couple of different types of peer pressure. For example: Verbal pressure: This is when someone makes a direct comment to peers in their age group to influence them to do something. In the article "Facts about Peer Pressure and Teen Drinking" the author points out that, 75% in the 12 to 17 year old age group said they were influenced by their peers to start consuming alcohol when they see their friends drinking. (Kay Uzoma) I have a couple of friends Sandra is a year older than me and Kyssha is two years older than me, I'm 21 and every time I talk to Kyssha she always tells me that I should visit her in Vegas and that "we" , like some of his friends, including me, "we should go for a drink and I should too." I always tell her that "I don't want to drink that, and also my parents don't want to approve of me starting to drink. Always knowing who they hang out with (who their friends are), which can be a bad influence. Also always knowing what kind of music they listen to and what they watch on TV because this is another cause of drinking among teenagers.
