HippiesThe 60s. A period in which many events arose and occurred. One particular movement, which many people called culture, had the name that many know as hippies. They rejected the traditional lifestyle and showed love and peace, they were also known as “Flower Children” (Flower Children). Hippies created anti-war movements in the 1960s and maintained these movements for a long period of time. As long as hippies lasted in American history, they did not inspire youth during the hippie generation (1960-1970). The hippies did not encourage the youth in a positive way. They conducted many experiments that had a huge effect on young people. The hippies did not galvanize the nation because of their lack of control over drug use, their laziness, and their access to free love. Hippies were known for their heavy drug use and at the time the anti-war movement contained a large amount of younger people. In the 1960s drugs were not seen as a corruption or a threat. They were seen as a cure for diseases. Specifically, the drugs were seen as painkillers, help you sleep, reduce worry, etc. (Hippies and drugs). Furthermore, in the 1950s, cigarettes were widely used. Citizens did not know the influence of cigarettes, causing people in the 1960s to naturally not realize how unacceptable drugs were. Furthermore, hippies mainly used hallucinogenic drugs, especially marijuana and lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). The article “Hippies” mentions how hippies “justified the practice as a way to expand consciousness” (hippies). Furthermore, hippies have engaged in the largest drug use in human history, completely uncontrolled (Hippies and Drugs). Young people have been exposed to that kind of b...... middle of paper ......lying with free love is horrible to think about. One article refers to the fact that free love is a well-known trait for a hippie: "There is no denying that many hippies were involved in temporary sexual relationships and sexual experimentation unlike any generation before them" (Sex, Love , and Hippies). This generation was the first to open up to free love, they had many sexual attitudes and fixations (Sex, Love and Hippies). Flower children, bohemians, free spirits or hippies, they have not changed their generation positively. Hippies ferociously changed the youth of their generation, taught horrible habits and lifestyles. Adolescence was greatly influenced, especially since most of the hippies were made up of them. Hippies taught drug use, laziness and free love. Even though the hippies were peaceful in their own person, they had many problems that many could not see.
