The totality of my identity consists primarily of an anthology of my stories, poems, and art. However, I struggled to get my stories heard properly. Until, a little over two years ago, I stumbled upon spoken word poetry and felt I had discovered a whole new medium of self-expression and a community full of eccentric, goofy, amazing poets who were also in love with this art form. In the indulgence of my literary passion, I have realized that it is a perfect medium for me to channel my love of writing into a performance that is both inspired and inspiring. Taking inspiration from my life, the growth of my city, the people around me, and the poets who came before me, I have an overwhelming desire to write my own story and inspire others to write theirs in the process. It is precisely for this reason that I chose to study Creative Writing to hone my writing skills and use them effectively. My love of poetry has led me to be a part of countless experiences that have shaped my writing and my personality as a writer. Total. Aside from influences from artists like Allen Ginsberg, Sylvia Plath, Shane Koyczan, and Bill Watterson, my journey has taken me through a path that has been instrumental in shaping my writing style and identity. Starting as the winner of a small slam poetry competition, I went on to compete in much larger events, perform at various venues, build friendships, and collaborate with artists from a thriving community of writers, poets, musicians, and teachers within and beyond my country . As a member of a Nepali spoken word poetry group, the Word Warriors, I have also held numerous workshops and taken this art form to different places. For the past year I have worked as part of a Word Warriors team that held a two-week tour of the West… to the center of the paper… of emotional and creative expression. I am proud to have pursued this passion and collaborated with talented street, studio and visual artists while painting murals for a Human Rights Film Festival and World Handwashing Awareness Day, organizing poetry events featuring paintings from I live and create a performance art piece in cohesion with poetry, visual art and original music. Therefore, it has been an immeasurable part of my artistic drive that also supports my writing perfectly. It is impossible to fully evaluate one's accomplishments and involvement in the future, but I am confident that with a college education in creative writing, I will finally be able to pursue a career in the literary field with greater competence and verve. I will be able to make a difference in my community by spreading poetry and making it a means to inspire people and make stories heard.
