I will build a therapeutic relationship with Regina for her pre-, peri- and post-operative periods, having an interdependent relationship known as an I-Thou relationship, based on equality, mutuality and reciprocity (Buber, 1958). The purpose of therapeutic communication skills is not to treat or cure an illness or disorder, rather to provide a sense of well-being to patients by making them feel relaxed and safe (Arnold and Boggs, 2011). As a nurse I will become familiar with Regina's past private and personal medical history, provide a private and safe environment for patient-centered communication that is strictly confidential to the medical team.
