As reported by Levin and Gooday (1992), the food consumed by xenophophores consisted primarily of detrital particles. It has been observed that abundant fecal material consisting of mineral granules is present within (or absorbed) xenophophore tests (Levin & Gooday, 1992). Because xenophophores are deep-sea benthic tubivores, their feeding behavior was thought to be similar to that of amoebae. Scientists have proposed three modes of feeding behavior, namely: suspension feeding (Tendal, 1972), surface deposit feeding (Lemche et al., cited in Levin & Gooday, 1992, p. 99), and particulate trapping at inside the tests.
