Grades are important. With passing or failing, there is no motivation to do better, but rather to just do well enough. A new grading policy that replaces letter grades with pass or fail ones will not help, but will hurt students in the long run. Letter grades encourage students to do well in school while passing or failing would create laziness. With letter grades, it is easy for students to observe their weaknesses and strengths. Realizing your weak points helps you recognize your strong ones. With the new pass or fail grading system, it would leave no room for improvement because many students would not strive to do much better than mediocre. These children would feel more obligated to overcome than to improve. As pass or fail takes over the letter grading system, the mindset and abilities of many students will most likely deteriorate.
