We are introduced to Helen for the first time while Lysander tries to dispel Demetrius' noble morals, claiming that he slept with the woman and although she you love it, don't you. Helena is finally able to express her perspective of the situation as she explains in the passage that she wishes to understand how Hermia enchanted these men into loving her. He wants Hermia to “…teach me how you look and with what art you control the motion of Demetrius' heart” (1.1.192-193). Art is defined as “Skill in doing something, esp. as a result of knowledge or practice” (OED, “art”, noun, sense 1). Helena describes the craft that she thinks Hermia is using as an art, talent, or skill that one should aspire to acquire. However, art can also be defined as “Cunning; cunning; deception, pretense; conduct or action which seeks to achieve its ends by artificial, indirect or hidden means” (Oxford English Dictionary, “art”, noun, sense 11a), and the ideas of deception and the play of artifices are heavy in the general leitmotif of Dream of a midsummer night as well as the underlined concerns of love triangles
