Preventing Police BrutalityFreddie Gray, Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, John Crawford, Eric Gardner, Jordan Baker. These are just some of the many, many African Americans who were killed by the police, all unarmed, all mistreated by the police, all shot to death, without any crime. Every twenty-eight hours a life is lost. Hundreds of innocent lives are being taken away from their families. Police officers, who are supposed to protect and serve, are instead killing and abusing civilians. These outrageous crimes would be prevented through police accountability, constant use of body cameras and the use of social media. Police brutality has been a significant problem for many years. The people most affected by this are people of color. They are subjected to racial inequality by the police and justice system every day. They are killed every day simply for existing. Excessive force used by police specifically against African Americans is ongoing; with the justice system doing almost nothing to change the situation. This is one of the reasons why they continue to kill and harass African Americans. According to Propublica, young black males are approximately twenty times more likely to be killed by police than their white peers. The killers walk free and innocent lives are taken. Over the past two years, thousands of people, both black and white, have been killed at the hands of police. While accountability has always been an issue, the injustices currently occurring make it a priority. Police officers receive “special treatment” and do not face charges for the crimes they commit. Police officers are not held accountable for their lives... middle of paper...the lives of these civilians are certainly more important. Since the justice system is not always in favor of the innocent, people have started to defend their rights. Whether by protesting or even showing their support on social media, this nation's youth are standing up to these injustices and demanding their rights back. They are a community united against injustice. Social media has paved the way for today's youth to connect and collaborate to achieve this goal. They come together through art, music, literature, protests, etc. to show their support. Social media allows the whole world to see what is really happening. Instead of receiving information from the media, they are able to listen and listen to the people who have been silenced. They are able to share experiences with each other, which results in the community available today
