After a couple sitting with Nick, Gatsby opens up to Nick. He describes himself as “the son of some wealthy people in the Middle West, all dead now. I grew up in America, because all my ancestors studied there for many years. It is a family tradition… Since then I have lived as a young rajah in all the capitals of Europe – Paris, Venice, Rome – collecting jewels” (Page 65). The description of the man that Gatsby portrays himself as is one that wants others to believe in him as genuinely as much as he wants to believe in them. His story was a little choppy and didn't quite add up, which was an eye-opener for Nick. He began to see beyond the man Gatsby tries to be and witnessed his true character. Gatsby began when he changed his name from James Gatz to Dan Cody's pleasure. This was the beginning of Dan Cody's rich pregnancy at 17 years old. When he couldn't get the inheritance from Dan Cody's death because his fiancé fought for it, he was left with nothing to prop up his image. An important theme alongside illusion versus reality was love, memory and the past. By far, the biggest disappointment that occurred in The Great Gatsby was Daisy's appearance and her love for Gatsby. Five years after his return from World War II, that is, his departure
