Case Study AnalysisAPA refers to addiction when a person initially starts using something for pleasure as he likes it, but then starts using it or doing it continuously, which then interferes with their responsibilities of daily life. To analyze this case study the perspectives used are the social and evolutionary approach to psychology. The issue analyzed concerns the reasons why Chris may not be able to control himself and why Jess may not want to help him. Chris might have become addicted due to several factors, one might have been the pressure of the society and the influence he has on people might be this. It may also have been the people he interacts with or the people he knew before that influenced him to spend a lot of money on material things. He may therefore have wanted to conform to fit in with the group and it may be a social norm towards them. His behavior could be explained by the theory of planned behavior/reasoned action. This was done by Ajzen and Fishbein (1980) who formulated this theory by stating that this theory helps to predict whether behavior is deliberate and planned or whether behavior is unintentional. Ajzen (1991) also stated that according to the theory, to change a person's behavior, his behavior must be modified according to his intentions. Ajzen also said that something a behavior might have happened in the past could contribute to what a person's future behavior might become. The beliefs Chris holds may be important in predicting his intentions just as it is important to know a person's attitudes. Cognitive dissonance (Festinger 1988) states that there are unintended consequences that may indicate an event that blocks the inte... . middle of paper ...... behavior, behavior develops in an individual, how it came into being through natural selection and how long it will survive. These levels may help understand why Chris may have developed this shopping addiction. Evolutionary psychology uses evolutionary biology to help identify how the human mind works. This is helpful in understanding why Jess might be stuck deciding what to do and also helps explain that Chris started from past experiences. To conclude, when linked together the perspectives become more effective, this is because the evolutionary and social approaches both help to explain the reason for dependency and help/love. The evolutionist can be linked to the social approach because he says everyone has to stick to a norm because they don't want to be seen as different, which could explain why Chris admits to having a shopping addiction.
