When they created the title of their book, dedicated to Stuart Hall, perhaps Paul Gilroy, Lawrence Grossberg and Angela McRobbie did not know that not only did they find an exact quote to summarize all the works of these influential cultural theorists, but also proposed the best phrase to describe Cultural Studies, that is, "without guarantee". Indeed, Cultural Studies is dedicated to questioning “guaranteed” knowledge as true in society and, more importantly, continually raising debates as a fundamental method of avoiding any “guaranteed” answers. As a central concept of Cultural Studies, "interpellation" reflects exactly these characteristics. First proposed by Louis Althusser in his essay "Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses (Notes Towards an Investigation)" (1971), "interpellation" was defined as a process through which concrete individuals are directed by ideology and then produced as subjects. Although the concept has opened a new era in identity research, it has still been subjected to numerous critical discussions for further development. Through the works selected below, Mladen Dolar and John Law contribute to these debates with two perspectives on the ways in which interpellation is managed within our society and within each individual. Mladen Dolar's essay "Beyond Interpellation" (1993) is largely based on his obsession with "a clear cut that can be followed on different levels" (p.75) existing in Althusserian theory.
