Many people are aware of the problem of child sex trafficking in the United States, but people may not be aware of the scope of the problem or what it is that attracts these " pimp" towards children in the sex trafficking industry. Sex trafficking is a major problem both in the United States and abroad, although many Americans do not realize that there are more U.S. citizens making up the number of traffickers' victims than foreign citizens, and among these victims, children are the most vulnerable. According to the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000, "(a) sex trafficking in which a commercial sexual act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such act does not has reached 18 years of age" years of age; or (b) the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision or procuring of a person for labor or services, through the use of force, fraud or coercion for the purpose of subjecting him to involuntary servitude, slavery, debt bondage or slavery ( cite).” It is also important to note that this definition includes both “exploitation” and “prostitution” of minors. Domestic child sex trafficking, also called DMST, includes forms of pornography, prostitution, escort services, stripping and other sexual services, and the most vulnerable victims are American children. There are believed to be at least 100,000 DMST victims in the United States (quote). Based on previous studies, the average age at which children are lured into sexual exploitation is between 11 and 14 years old (cite). “At least 70% of women involved in prostitution were introduced to the commercial sex industry before reaching 18 years of age (quote).” Minors are the most at risk of becoming victims... in the medium of paper, music, clothing and television and someone can take a stand to stop the sale of these products that the behaviors of exploitation of prostitution and of prostitution (cite). One way that increased efforts to minimize the demand for prostitution was to outlaw the sale of sexual products and criminalize “johns,” and this was done for the first time in Sweden and Norway (quote) . “The message is communicated to society that it is inappropriate to buy and sell women and children for sexual purposes (quote).” The final option discussed by (quote) in efforts to provide for victims is to increase services for children and youth transitioning out of commercial sexual situations. Fundraising efforts can be made to help support local shelters in the knowledge that a safe place to live has a major impact on the risk of being deemed a repeat runaway or re-victim of the sex trade.
