In the tragedy of Hamlet by William Shakespeare, the author shows many internal and external conflicts within Hamlet due to his mother's remarriage, his love for Ophelia and her father's death. There are many interpretations as to why Hamlet behaves the way he does, but these are the three main topics. As he faces all these conflicts, he is forced to try to understand what happened to his father. This play is truly a tragedy because he faces so many conflicts that ultimately kill almost everyone, including himself. Is this why he committed suicide? One struggle in this tragedy that Prince Hamlet faced was the death of his father, King Hamlet. Hamlet didn't like the fact that his mother, Queen Gertrude, married his uncle, what will you do for her? (V, I, 283-284). However, while she was alive he had to make it seem like he didn't care about her or even love her. Hamlet also has to live with the fact that he is one of the reasons he kills himself, along with many of his terrible crimes (Rooks). It could be argued that the love between Hamlet and Ophelia is like Romeo and Juliet (Feingold). The reason for this is that Ophelia drowned herself because of everything that was going on and just wanted to be with Hamlet. Since Hamlet has lost everyone, including the love of his life, he drinks the poison and kills himself. The third conflict Hamlet faced was the death of his father. During the show he tried to understand the cause of his father's death. His friend Horatio came to Hamlet saying that he had seen his father's ghost while guarding the castle. Hamlet, wanting to test whether this was true, stayed out the next night to see if his father's ghost would appear. Once he spoke to his father's ghost, he discovered that his father had been poisoned. Hamlet's uncle was the one who poisoned Hamlet's father. This is because his uncle wanted to become king by marrying Hamlet's mother, Gertrude. Throughout this play it is shown how much Hamlet loves his father. Some of these examples include Hamlet trying to understand how his father died and in doing so he cast aside the love of his life. He was also angry at his mother for trying to replace his father so quickly, and was quick to want to kill his uncle when he found out the truth about his father.
