Having a birth defect such as cleft lip may be encouraged to undergo plastic surgery because it may affect the adolescent or child. A cleft lip occurs when a baby's lip or mouth does not develop properly during pregnancy. Teenagers sometimes have difficulty adjusting to school due to constant bullying from their peers. The main problem for teenagers is feeling uncomfortable when others point out their flaws and for some teenagers the solution is to undergo plastic surgery to cover the defect and be fixed. An example of this could be the case of Nadia Ilse who at 14 years old wanted to undergo plastic surgery for an otoplasty which consists of fixing her ears. She was constantly bullied by her peers about her ears and after the surgery she felt more confident about her appearance, which is ultimately a good thing.
