What will happen to us when we die? Some people have never considered what might happen to them after life. For many people, death is a fearful event because they do not know what to expect after death. However, other people, such as religious people, are aware of what to expect after death due to their beliefs. Each religion has different ideas and different ways of looking at life. Death, therefore, is viewed by different religions in many ways. Although different religions have distinct views of death, they all have something in common: they give people hope. Of all the world's different religions, four of the most common – Catholic, Jewish, Islamic and Hindu – view death in different ways. One way in which death can be seen is found in the Catholic religion. Catholic believers look at life after death from the perspective of three different worlds, such as Hell, Purgatory and Heaven depending on the actions committed during life. If a person during his life has committed any sin, the next world of this person will be Hell. The traditional view with which people refer to hell is found in the book written by Dante Alighieri, “The Divine Comedy”. In the book it is stated that the formation of Hell was caused by the crash of Lucifer (the angel who wanted to be better than God) from heaven to earth. Crashing to Earth in Jerusalem, its head formed an inverted cone inside the Earth. This is where Hell is. In Hell men pay for their sins with various penances (12-13). For example, a person who committed murder will freeze in a frozen lake from the breath of Satan (XXXIV canto). If a person commits some sin during his life but asks for forgiveness, then he will go to Purgatory. Purgatory is represented by an island with a mountain (23). One source states that “Purgatory is very similar to Hell; the main difference is that you will eventually be freed from torture. Souls who go to Purgatory are tortured with fire. These souls remain in purgatory until they become sufficiently purified to enter heaven” (2). For example, if a soul in Purgatory asks for forgiveness and pays the punishment with some trials, the soul will be freed and immediately transferred to Heaven (2).
