Evil can come from the best of intentions. People always intend to bring benefits to humanity, but they bring more sacrifices than benefits. In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the main characters die at the hands of many characters who step down. As the play progresses, Friar Laurence, the Capulet family, and the Nurse bring about the untimely demise of the star-crossed lovers. Friar Laurence is the main instigator of Romeo and Juliet's death. It is considered the saving beacon of the city of Verona as it had to act as a moral compass for the Veronese; however, he does not fulfill his moral responsibility to help the disillusioned Romeo. When Romeo approaches him with the intent of marrying Juliet, Friar Laurence responds, "I will be your assistant" (2.3.90) in an attempt to "transform [Romeo's] family resentment into pure love" (2.3.93). Regardless of the fact that Friar Laurence is fully aware of Romeo's superficial love for Juliet as Romeo clings to any beautiful woman he sees, he still sees this as an opportunity to reconcile the burning hatred between the Capulets and the Montagues, ignoring the fact that their dangerous infatuation could bring misfortune and misery to the two misguided young men. He continually acts on the idea of the greater good, neglecting the safety of the two star-crossed lovers. When Juliet is forced to marry the earldom, Juliet "longs to die" (4.1.68) and, as a result, Friar Lawrence gives Juliet a sleeping potion where "[her] pulse... calms down" (4.1.99) . to make her seemingly dead to reunite her with Romeo. To avoid bigamy, Friar Lawrence acts impulsively rather than rationally as he hatches a dangerous plan, giving a deadly potion into the hands of an innocent girl without thinking... middle of paper... the Nurse. When Juliet is forced to marry the shire, the nurse suggests that it is "better [to marry] the shire" (3.5.218). The Nurse's advice falls on deaf ears as Juliet is too affected by love that follows passion rather than reason, leading her to feel abandoned. The Nurse only wanted to see her platonic "daughter" happy, she acts independently of instinctive and irrational actions that lead to untimely ends for the unfortunate Juliet and Romeo. and bad luck. In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the main characters die at the hands of many characters who step down. Friar Laurence, the Capulet family and the Nurse cause the untimely demise of the star-crossed lovers. The characters' instinctive acts drive home a ruthless philosophy of passion over reason.
