Lois Lowry, author of the book The Giver, often draws her young protagonists from her own experiences as a child. Lowry was born March 20, 1937 (Dellinger). During her early life she was very interested in reading and was very solitary (Dellinger). This is where she got the idea to become an author. Lowry continued to pursue his dream of writing at Brown University (Dellinger). After graduation, she returned to college at the University of Southern Maine to further study writing (Dellinger). Lowry married a naval officer and together they had four children (Dellinger). Lowry often used his children's escapades as inspiration for his books (Dellinger). Continuing, The Giver is the story of a young boy named Jonas who lives in a dystopian society (Hanson). Jonas is different, however, because unlike others in the community, he has the ability to see colors and retain memories such as war, snow, and even a sunburn (Hanson). To summarize, Lois Lowry uses foreshadowing, setting, and symbolism in The Giver to represent the theme of man versus society. Moving forward, Lowry uses foreshadowing in the story to show the reader that Jonas is breaking free from the “brainwashing” of his community. This helps apply the man versus society theme because it is actually Jonas versus his community. An example of foreshadowing is when Jonas sees the apple "change" (Lord). He's confused about what's wrong, so he takes it home, during which time he breaks the rules. No matter how much Jonas studied the apple, he couldn't find the "change" he saw. This foreshadows Jonas's ability to "see beyond." Furthermore, this shows that Jonas stands out among the people in his community because only a select few are able to detect this "change".
