Better income may have encouraged professional migration, but that wasn't the only purpose. The adventurous aspect of the journey has attracted many young immigrants to take the next steps towards an enriching life. Collective desires are the shared interests of immigrant nurses as a whole. The group fanaticizes American life through gossip. They discuss the steps in their migration process such as “recruiting agencies and immigration opportunities, filling out immigration applications” (Choy 95). Networks and connections are established through mutual support. These connections will be found useful in the future. Immigrants speak so highly of this utopian world that they have never set foot in it. Their view of American life has been distorted through the manipulation of advertising. In Empire of Care, Catherine Ceniza Choy discusses an advertisement that features New York City landscapes such as the Manhattan skyline stating that New York City is “where the world seeks the best medical care” (102).
