Topic > Electric Cars: The Future of the Future - 1442

If we turned all commercial vehicles in the United States into hybrid or plug-in electric vehicles using our current technology, we could reduce our dependence on foreign oil and lower pollution from carbon from transport. According to Energy.gov, “in 2012, President Obama launched the EV Everywhere Grand Challenge, an initiative of the Department of Energy.” It was a way to bring together America's best and brightest scientists, engineers and companies to make plug-in electric vehicles as affordable as today's gasoline-powered vehicles. This was a way to promote the construction of alternative fuel vehicles while respecting the prices of its peers and to help achieve these emissions savings. On the battery front, work is underway to overcome major technical barriers that prevent large-scale improvements in batteries. Some agencies have research and development projects where they are advancing technologies that could alter how electric vehicles could operate in the near future. From investing in new types of batteries that could go further on a single charge to cost-effective alternatives to key materials for electric motors, new designs could transform electric vehicles. Ultimately, only time will tell what road-going electric vehicles will look like
