Within sight of the Russian Federation, the Russians signed a treaty ending the war they were in with Germany. This treaty, the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, caused Russia to lose large amounts of territory. This treaty also brought Russia out of World War I. The Russian Empire began to collapse in 1918. In the same year Russia began a civil war. This war is between the Red Army and the White Russians, also known as anti-communists. The White Russians were aided by France, Great Britain and the United States. In the seventy years following 1922, Russia will become part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. As the Soviet Union collapses, Russia becomes independent. Ukraine, Belarus and Russia form the Commonwealth of Independent States. Eventually, all of the former Soviet Union will be united, except the Baltic States. Russia then takes the Soviet Union's place in the United Nations Security Council. In September 1993, President Borlis Yeltsin suspended the current parliament and announced that new elections were necessary. The deputies barricade themselves in the Parliament building. In October this year the president orders the Russian army to attack the parliament building. The battle was bloody, but the army managed to take back the building. In December the Russians approved a new constitution. This constitution gave the president broad power. In 1995 the Communist Party won the majority of votes in the elections. This gave the party more than a third of the seats in the Duma. The following year, 1996, Yeltsin was re-elected to another presidential term. He signs a group of treaties that all provide for peace and borders with countries with which Russia had been at war. Two years later Yeltsin shoots h... middle of paper... foul. The Chechen government, however, accused the Russian government of provoking the attack. In August 2004, a massacre occurred in schools. The result is 330 deaths, most of which were children. This too was attributed to a different government. Over the next 3 years, many attacks and deaths occurred for various reasons. Some bombings by Chechen rebels, some by other extremists. During this time Russia will also develop its own submarines, be bailed out by other countries, sign a list of treaties, and even withdraw from some treaties. Russia also cuts oil supplies to Ukraine. Mosca claims that the cause is to be found in prices, while various sources maintain that it is all due to politics. This government is the government that Russia still has today. They are still dealing with everyday problems, just like we do here in the United States.
