When I began my new journey to becoming a dental hygienist, I entered the program with no dental experience. I entered this program with an open mind and eager to embrace new concepts and develop new skills. During my time at the Canadian Academy of Dental Hygiene (CADH), I learned that, as a dental hygienist, I am committed to promoting and helping each individual achieve their optimal oral health goals. In support of my client's goals, I may take on some or all of the roles included in the dental hygiene scope of practice. My goal during this program was to help my clients achieve their optimal oral health goals through education, health promotion, and the provision of preventative and clinical therapy. At CADH I was taught how to act on the eight skills in different aspects for the public. As a clinician I was taught how to apply the dental hygiene care process; evaluate signs and symptoms, as well as risk factors related to oral disease, then make a diagnosis, plan, implement and evaluate treatment as part of dental hygiene practice. One of the many important roles of the dental hygienist is to be part of a dental care team where we work in collaboration with a dentist or dental specialist. I have been able to extensively develop my management skills to understand the administrative environment of the school, as well as the responsibilities and authority roles of my teachers and other professionals involved. As an administrator, I am responsible for managing the periodontal status of my clients, identifying the presence of disease, establishing treatment priorities, eliminating risk factors and deciding whether the client is already in a maintenance state or requires further special treatments . Like…half of the document…initial therapy I learned during the program. As a dental hygiene student I am already implementing ethical, legal and regulatory concepts for providing dental hygiene care processes and will use these foundations throughout my career as a professional oral healthcare provider. Additionally, as a dental hygienist I will pursue lifelong learning to provide informed client care decisions using the most current evidence-based research. Therefore, I am committed to continuing to learn and expand my skills and knowledge throughout my career. Graduating from CADH provided me with great academic knowledge and clinical skills needed to apply the concepts of health promotion and disease prevention. The experience I have gained at CADH will allow me to provide specific, empathetic, empathetic and appropriate treatment to all my future clients.
