Topic > The Importance of Motivation in Education - 807

This is extremely important for students moving on to higher levels of education. Research has shown that students with positive social and emotional skills generally have higher rates of academic success than those who are easily vulnerable to the conflicts and difficulties around them. It is evident that most of the latter students are not motivated from within, the learning environment and even their family. For example, I observed a seventh grade student who was constantly reprimanded by teachers for not doing his work. The teachers made little effort to uncover the underlying issues surrounding him. He comes from a large family with 8 other siblings and his parents living in a 3 bedroom house. There are some family issues that are affecting his concentration and ability to learn. He was apparently going through a conflict with himself and the world around him. In these cases, motivation is the powerful element that can strengthen a person emotionally, but it must be applied in a productive and meaningful way. Consequently, the teacher should act as a guide and role model to transform difficulties into learning
