Blood BrothersOur last topic was Blood Brothers. We spent 6 workshops studying the work written by Willy Russell. Blood Brothers tells the story of the Johnstone twins, Mickey and Eddie, brothers separated at birth who reunite and become friends in childhood, unaware of their relationship or what the consequences of their friendship will be. The key themes of the play are superstition, nature versus nurture, social classes, dramatic irony, contrast and stereotypes. In one of the first workshops we focused on the first meeting between Mickey and Eddie. We were asked to create two still images playing the boys. I had to consider the kids' ages and how that would affect their behavior. We then added layers to the scene, including a piece of movement and then dialogue. I realized that because they had grown up in different environments, there would be a contrast between still images of the two boys. When I was asked to play Eddie, I sat on the floor, reading a book. I proved that I got bored turning pages half-heartedly when I added movement. When I play Mickey Mouse I pretend to fly a fighter plane. This was a reference to the period in which the play was set (early 1960s), not long after the end of the Second World War. This showed that Mickey Mouse was resourceful as he would hardly be able to afford toys. Later we performed a section of Act 2 - Scene 2. I played Mickey and James played the part of Eddie. I used what I had learned from the still images on how to act considering the ages of the characters. I decided it would be better to fidget and show a general lack of concentration. I depicted Mickey's restlessness by looking around while Eddie spoke. We were constantly changing the topic of conversation to... middle of paper... something... A new necklace, some jewelry, whatever you want." Ellie shook her head, rejecting the offer, showing that this meant more to her than how aware Mr Lyons was. I looked shocked, implying that I had managed to solve a problem with money in the past. Then we stopped, bringing the focus back to Laura who said "I can't cope with all these children",. then she froze and Ellie said "I can't live without having children." Exploring this scenario, the contrast between their respective lives and how they both had what the other wanted children became apparent but she could not have any and Mrs. Johnston would not be able to support any more children but was, in fact, pregnant with twins. Although Mr. Lyons attempted to settle the situation with expensive gifts, he was refused by proving that, although she is rich , he can't have the one thing he wants: children..
