Topic > From Old English and Modern English (OE) to Present English

OE does not contribute significantly to the comparison between the two processes since it constitutes the beginning of English. The ME morphology underwent a large loss of inflections which continued in MoE until reaching the simpler system that characterizes the PDE. The syntax incorporated a more fixed word order, the use of auxiliaries, and today's form of negation. English vocabulary has been the most comparable feature regarding the different nature of procedures since ME adopted borrowings from the Norman and French invaders while colonization provided a way to incorporate new words by modifying existing terms. Based on these results, we can conclude that the two types of events influenced the English language differently, invasions being a process of language formation while conquests can be considered a process of completing the English language..
