Some effects of the Truman Doctrine have had a great impact on regional and global affairs since it was announced during the Cold War. To begin with, Greece and Turkey were saved from the communist Soviet Union, Truman wanted to prevent communism from coming out and spreading outside of the Soviet Union. The Truman Doctrine would rather one country with communism than two other countries be invaded by communist rebels. President Harry S. Truman told Congress that "it shall be the policy of the United States to support free people who resist attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressure." and for years Britain supported Greece, but by then it was close to bankruptcy and was forced to slowly withdraw its troops. And in 1947, Britain asked the United States to take on the role of supporting the Greek government and the policy gained the support of the Republicans who controlled Congress, and they sent $400 million to Greece and Turkey, but no military force in the region. The effects of this action were positive because both Turkey and Greece joined NATO in 1952, a military alliance that guaranteed their protection the Truman Doctrine is the basis of American Cold War policy throughout Europe and throughout the world
