One of the most significant and happiest moments in life is the wedding ceremony; it is also the symbol of the union of the hearts of two people. Furthermore, the wedding celebration will reflect the culture of each country. A typical Vietnamese wedding emphasizes traditions and customs. It is also more complex and takes longer to prepare than a casual wedding in the United States. Growing up in Vietnam and studying in the United States, I observed some cultural variations in the marriage of two countries. Vietnamese and American wedding customs, the Eastern wedding and the Western wedding, are beautiful; however, since there are many differences between the two cultures, the wedding style is also different. A wedding dress is essential in every country wedding. At the Vietnamese wedding, members of both families often wear “Ao Dai”, the traditional dress. The attire of the bride and groom is brighter and brighter than that of everyone else. Their clothes always have the golden dragon and phoenix embroidered representing the groom and the bride. The bride's dress is preferably red in color, which symbolizes happiness, luck and joy. The bride also wears a “khan dong”, a headdress (“Cultural Values”). Nowadays, Vietnamese couples also wear Western wedding dresses and black tuxedos during their wedding along with classic Vietnamese wedding dresses in traditional ceremonies. In contrast, American couples wear black tuxedos for the groom and a beautiful long wedding dress for the bride during their wedding. Most of the time people choose the white dress and wear it with a white veil. The color white represents innocence and purity. Nowadays, marriage in Vietnam has changed due to busy modern life and influences of Western culture. Vietnamese no longer celebrate a complex and expensive wedding as before, but they still maintain the most important parts of the traditional wedding. American wedding can be simpler and less economical. However, even when the wedding celebration of both cultures is simple or complex, cheap or expensive, it is always the most important and happiest day in people's lives.
