When you drive around the city, how many fast food restaurants do you see? How many supermarkets do you see? In 2013, there were approximately “232,611 fast food establishments in the United States” (Establishments). Meanwhile, "around 35,600 supermarkets were operational in 2009 alone" (Reinvestment Fund). These statistics show that there are many more fast food restaurants available to consumers across the country than supermarkets. A study comparing the availability of fruit and vegetables and fast food shows that “residents in disadvantaged neighborhoods are more likely to be exposed to high-energy foods available in convenience stores and fast food outlets (FFO) while having little access to supermarkets that offer healthier foods." foods” (Mercille et al. par 1). Because of the low cost of their products, fast food restaurants tend to locate their restaurants in communities where people tend to earn less money, while supermarkets selling fresh fruits and vegetables are scarce.
