Exclusively Walmart? It is a product of the times we live in and neither helps nor hinders. It is simply a part of a retail service system that exists and would exist with or without Walmart. The strange focus on places like Walmart but not Target or Home Depot or JCPenny or Kohl's always amazes me. For example, since Walmart is the largest, it is the most guilty or something. Which is stupid. Nobody screws workers like "softlines" retail does. Walmart doesn't even come close. Does this system harm the American economy? I think so. Having worked in retail for over a decade as a manager, the goal was to lower wages. Those words were NEVER used, but that was the net goal: lower wages. At Walmart, Target, and Kohl's we were compensated at various times not only for payroll management (which involves scheduling small staff to handle payroll), but average hourly wage was also a target goal. Now, these companies will ALWAYS fall back on "We abide by state and US laws and always pay a fair wage... blah blah blah." Which is bullshit. They don't....
