The first level refers to surface culture which refers to the fleeting images depicted in popular culture such as TV, movies, and music. The surface level is often based on stereotypes. Crime shows like NCIS and CSI follow crime scenes in major cities across the United States and are exaggerated for dramatic purposes. The shows contain “fast-paced suspense drama, with good-looking actors…” (Ting-Toomey & Chung, 2012, p. 17). Television producers give more credit to ratings than factual information. Music videos and movies also heighten the party scene found in American colleges. I Love College by Asher Roth, illustrates a party school where people sleep until 1am and never go to class (2009). Although partying and drinking are common on campus, most students are also focused on their education in the meantime.
