When I thought about the speaking servants in my life, I immediately thought of my father. My father is a servant for many different reasons. He's a great role model for me. He is a man who shows patience, calmness and kindness. He also speaks up for people and is excellent when it comes to multicultural speaking. When I think of his patience, I think back to when I was little. I was an extremely picky little girl when it came to food (especially when it came to tomatoes or meat). I just didn't like eating unless the food was sweet. A rule in our family was that the kids couldn't leave the table until all the food was eaten off the plates. For this reason I often sat at the table for hours munching on food. Since I wasn't a good eater, I always had to sit at the table next to my father because he was very patient with me and could convince me to eat. He is a great example of a peacemaker. My family is a missionary family. For this reason, we are often surrounded by antagonistic people. One story that comes to mind about him happened in Mexico in the late 1970s. My mother and father were church planters there. Back then, there were two groups of people you didn't want to be on the bad side of: the police and the soldiers. Both were very corrupt. The police had a reputation for extorting money from people without reason, using threats of imprisonment or violence. The soldiers were a little less corrupt (but still corrupt), the government sent them into the villages to keep the police in line. Now my mother and father stood out in the villages where they planted churches, I mean, they were gringos. To remain at peace with both groups, the police and the soldiers, my father would go to play basketball with them, and send...... middle of paper ...... ily's friends come from a culture or from a different country. Because he knows what it means to be a foreigner, he is able to relate to people of all ethnic groups and cultures. About four years ago he started a Bible school for Hispanic leaders who have no training and are already in ministry. Because it is sensitive to cultural differences and has shaped the curriculum to fit their culture, the Bible school is a great success. Because he is so good at communicating multiculturally, he has planted churches among different people. He has planted churches for gypsies, shunned Amish, tribal Mexicans, mentally unstable people, former drug addicts, and even inmates in a maximum security prison! He understands and loves marginalized people, so they tend to gravitate towards him. Not only is my father a role model of a servant speaker to me, but he is also my superhero..
