Topic > Understanding Challenges in Everyday Communication

Friend and Cook (2013) highlight the importance of being culturally aware and understanding how to communicate with others (p. 42-43). As a special education teacher, working with diverse parents and students is important, knowing how to communicate with them is important. Finding the appropriate method of communicating with parents can be helpful when a teacher finds culturally appropriate methods of communication. Some parents may like the teacher to be direct about what is happening with their child. Others would prefer that the teacher share information about a more sensitive issue. Regardless of the parent's preferences, knowing how to approach a parent based on their culture is important to avoid confusion or misunderstanding. Knowing how to approach a parent, the teacher-parent relationship is at a professional level because the parent feels comfortable talking to the teacher. As a teacher, spending more time learning about students' cultures can help you approach parents about topics they consider personal. Becoming culturally aware improves relationships with both the student and parents and helps students grow within themselves
