During the scene where Willard and his crew search the natives' boat, they end up shooting and killing all the passengers because they believe they contain weapons or explosives when in reality the only item they were “hiding” was a puppy. If the crew had taken just a few moments before firing to ensure there were no hazardous materials on board, instead of killing them because they were presumed to be dangerous, then innocent people would not have died. The crew fired their guns simply because it was easier than the alternative. Because the crew did not control themselves or their actions, innocent natives died. Instead of trying to help these natives, the crew members exterminate them, and instead of being careful of the strange land, the crew members walk around and act as if they own it. “Civilized” Americans are supposed to be the ones with moderation, and should be very cautious of a foreign land, but due to their inflated egos they see themselves as
