Entry Level Firefighter Selection Process The Entry Level Firefighter Selection Process in the Hurst, Euless and Bedford (HEB) area it's similar to that across the country. The process begins with a written evaluation. The written test consists of understanding the text; interpretation tables; situational judgment; logical reasoning; apply basic mathematical rules; mechanical aptitude; spatial sense; map reading; and vocabulary. (IPMA AssessmentServices 2003) These tests are usually purchased from the InternationalPublic Management Association (IPMA). Once the candidate has successfully passed the written test, we proceed to the physical agility test. Agility tests consist of specific tasks that firefighters typically perform at the scene of an emergency. The agility test must be completed within a specified time. The next step in the selection process is the panel interview. Applicants are interviewed by suppression staff to determine their value system and decision-making skills. Once all interviews have been completed, candidates are ranked by the panel and background investigations begin. The background investigation consists of verifying employment history, past job performance, reference checks and credit checks. Applicants who meet department requirements complete a polygraph examination. The polygraph is used to verify that the information provided by the applicant during the interview process and background investigation is factual. Applicants are then interviewed by the fire chief. During this interview the candidate is given the opportunity to explain any imperfections discovered during the background...... middle of paper...... fighter. One weakness identified is the physical agility test. Women who take the agility test tend to lack the strength and stamina needed to successfully pass the exam. One method that would improve the pass rate for women is to establish a fitness program for potential applicants. This program would include weight training and cardiovascular training. Active participants in the training program will therefore possess the physical requirements necessary to pass the exam.
