"The early 1990s brought a dramatic change with the advent of digital technology." (Making the Transition from Film to Digital) Digital technology has revolutionized the photography industry. From the first dated photographs of a person taken by Louis Daguerre in 1838 to today's world where technology is constantly changing around us, the photographic medium has remained the same. As time goes by, it becomes easier to take technically flawless photographs, regarding exposure and focus. It is still as difficult to capture aesthetically appealing images as it was in the age of film and chemicals. Technology is a necessity, but not sufficient to create art. The technology is impressive. Simply using the automatic setting can ensure acceptable exposure, but using the controls correctly is completely different. Autofocus will work to meter the light and try to reduce red eye. Newer and more expensive consumer cameras now offer face and smile detection capabilities. You might think you have to work hard to get a bad photo with these fancy extras on new digital cameras, but in reality, when using autofocus, it's very easy to get a "bad photo." The user is assumed to know the camera, when in some cases it uses automatic settings, creating a false sense of user ability. This false sense of user ability comes from the lack of knowledge the photographer has about the subject matter and equipment. By only knowing how to use the autofocus settings, you as a photographer are not only hurting yourself in the long run, but you are also harming the ability to learn something by tampering with other settings the false sense of the user's capabilities can be attributed to...... middle of paper...tacles that were soon to arrive. “It became difficult for them to change the model,” he explains. “…In a sense, [the technology] has cannibalized a fairly profitable and well-regarded existing business.” Difficulties lead Kodak to file for bankruptcy in 2012. (Digital Camera Inventor Explains How Technology Took Down Kodak.) To conclude, the photography industry has been affected by technological changes from film to digital. With the advancement of technology, the old film medium is being replaced by digital. I've given you examples of how film is being phased out of the photography industry, the motion picture industry, the social media industry, and the cell phone industry. For better or worse, technology will continue to change. With the increase in technology, I wonder if and possibly when cinema will no longer be a privileged medium.
