In Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Legacy by Barack Obama, the author is troubled by a group of conflicting emotions. Confusion and desperation lead the author to search for the future that will help him find his place in life. At the beginning of his autobiography, the author describes himself as a person without signs of identity. Upon his arrival in New York City, Obama explains that he had no place to stay nor sufficient monetary funds to rent at least a motel room which is cheaper than a hotel room. Unsure what to do, Obama decides to search his pockets and finds a letter. This was a letter his father had written to him. The letter stated that whenever Obama wanted to visit his father in Kenya, he would be welcome and arrangements would be made about how long he would be allowed to stay. Reading this letter led Obama to question his place in life. Obama was a young teenager confused to know that his father had never been there. Obama was angry that he had reached New York City and had no one to greet him. Yet, above all, Obama was sad to know that his father had another family that had not suffered the things he had suffered, given that his father was a man with a respectable position in government. It was difficult for Obama to know that his father was the person he had the greatest resemblance to in terms of physical appearance and was never around. There were so many questions and confusions in Obama's head. His mother was a white woman and he was black. Obama needed to find a community where he felt welcome. Despite Obama's traumas produced by the lack of his father's presence, Obama proved to be very intelligent. He was a student at Columbia University. He was one of the few black students who went to…paper center…community organizer. It was difficult to find work in that field as he applied everywhere, but received no responses. However, Obama's persistence got him hired into this office where he did a lot of organizational work, but was never paid. This failure did not stop Obama from trying to realize his dreams. One day he received news that another agency wanted to hire him. Obama went to the interview, but felt strangely strange about the job offer and the man trying to hire him. The man was white and this made Obama suspicious. As a result, Obama simply decided to pack up his things and move to Chicago, where he hopes to find better results. The truth is that Barack Obama has gone through a path of confusion and desperation. Yet, every experience, good and bad, helped him see the world from a different perspective. A perspective that would guide him towards a successful future.
