On 22 July 2011 Norway came under attack when a bomb exploded in Oslo and a mass shooting occurred on the island of Utoeya. These attacks were carried out by 33-year-old Anders Breivik, who managed to kill 77 people before surrendering and arresting himself. By analyzing the coverage of this story, I will address what sources and language were used and how this influenced the public's understanding of the event. I will focus in particular on the tabloid "The Sun" and the newspaper "The Guardian", both of which published the story on their front page on 23 July. This essay will also address why this story was so socially significant and why it received and continues to receive so much coverage. I will argue that this story has international social significance, and as a result false information was released by "The Sun" newspaper, without significant evidence. On 22 July at 3.26pm a car bomb exploded outside government buildings and the prime minister's office in central Oslo, killing 8 people and wounding many others. As chaos erupted in the city centre, Breivik went to the island of Utoeya, armed with firearms and a fake police uniform. While impersonating an officer, he gained access to the island and rounded up the campers before opening fire. After the first reports of the shootings at 5.26pm, a specialized police SWAT team was dispatched from Oslo to Utoeya at 5.40pm. However, upon arrival, the police had to wait for a suitable boat to take them to the island, delaying the police intervention. This allowed Breivik to shoot undisturbed for over an hour, before he was finally arrested at 6.27pm, after surrendering to the police. Most of Breivik's victims were white, half... half paper... through them. This gives newspapers more concrete information, while also getting commentary from a useful elite source.
