Operational Barriers to Success Starting a business and thriving in that industry in today's society can be challenging yet rewarding. There are many obstacles and characteristics that can prevent a company from being successful. Companies in every industry have faced challenges that they have had to overcome to consistently compete with major competitors. An organization can identify barriers early to be able to adapt and overcome challenges. What are the obstacles organizations face? Barriers are anything that can prevent a business or organization from succeeding. Many companies and organizations identify these barriers and improve capabilities rather than implement organizational restructuring (Wyner, 2004). Restructuring can be a timely and cost-effective measure to manage obstacles; one should instead focus on the organization's activities to find ways to circumvent barriers (Wyner, 2004). For example, understanding customer needs, acquiring and managing customers, and product development are all efficient processes for identifying barriers within a company (Wyner, 2004). Organizations can use surveys as a way to identify operational barriers. Moore states, “Their extensive 'Making Change Work Study' interviewed over 1,500 project leaders, sponsors, project managers, and change managers from many of the world's leading organizations, ranging in size from small to very large” (2009). Surveys such as the "Making Change Work Study" serve to research management change practices that affect small and large projects in the implementation phase (Moore, 2009). In today's society and economy, businesses around the world must be able to adapt to change and adapt successfully to sustain a competitive advantage (Moore, 2009). Compa...... middle of paper ......in my opinion I would have conducted an analysis of the origin of the barriers and compared each barrier based on the impact it has on the company. Barrier asset management consists of an audit of rules and practices that expose barriers that impede the company's success, rather than restructuring the organization's performance systems (Rieger, 2011). Although removing barriers is a daunting task, once the barriers are overcome it is a true sign of success (Rieger, 2011). Organizations in every industry face operational barriers at some level to achieve success. These barriers, among many others, cannot be ignored, as they can affect not only a company's operations, but also the reputation consumers perceive of that company. It is critical to identify barriers and work to overcome them to truly succeed and maintain a competitive advantage.
