My academic background in writing remained, for the most part, completely uniform in the expectations and foundations my teachers had for assessment. Although each class assignment my teachers assigned was different, the basic standard for the grading procedure was always the same; four to six sentences per paragraph, three paragraphs per article detailing a separate element of the report in each paragraph, concluding with a thesis paragraph. This assignment is very similar to these, except for an additional sentence or two added to each paragraph and a single thesis sentence instead of a paragraph. Many of my assignments were very simple, such as simply being told to write an essay about a famous philosopher, probably for the teacher's convenience during grading. The standards between high school and college seem very similar, as I half expected college to turn into one long series of endlessly long theses and term papers. This is actually one of the first writing assignments I had in college. Say no to plagiarism. Get a tailor-made essay on "Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned"? Get an Original Essay The assignments I had before were usually very short and could be written in a day. My previous class in ART 131 was particularly surprising, as I expected a long, dozen-page paper by the end of the semester detailing the history of art. The assignment for ART 131 was not a dozen pages but actually about two pages, which seems more realistic. The longest paper I had to write for any course was a three-month assignment detailing the Peloponnesian War for my sixth-grade history class, which included a cover page and bibliography, completely new to me all era. With the use of Microsoft Word on every paper I had to write, many teachers would deduct points for simple spelling errors, as it would be quite easy to spell check and preview before handing in a paper. For this reason most of my assignments, including that of this course, are set to a higher standard than most before word processing. In addition to a higher degree of punctuation and spelling than previous generations, most assigned essays require extensive bibliographies and sources. The advent of computers has also improved this field, allowing many students to obtain hundreds of thousands of reliable pieces of information with a simple search on a search engine. It's almost a whirlwind of new assessment standards over the last twenty years or so that have reworked the mindsets of both students and teachers. While it is difficult, it is simply the same level of difficulty that our previous classmates had worked on, just simply a different way of writing. Most students I knew had difficulty writing essays that kept the point without adding dozens of unnecessary sources in their bibliographies and unable to maintain the theme. Being able to compose a clear, coherent message from a mountain of data is a necessary skill to learn within our current service-oriented workforce. New, non-traditional teaching methods may be easier in some ways, but they are still able to provide the concepts needed to conform to modern society. Please note: this is just an example.
