It was during this time that he began playing golf, attending Clovis East High School where he was part of the school's golf team. At age 16, as a sophomore, DeChambeau got his first taste of victory by winning the California State Junior Championship. After graduating high school in 2012, Bryson DeChambeau accepted an athletic scholarship to attend Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. While majoring in physics, DeChambeau competed for the school's golf team and became the first person from the school to win the NCAA individual championship in June 2015. A few months later, he added the U.S. Amateur title to his collection and is joined an elite list of players who won both titles in the same year. Following that success, DeChambeau decided to join the PGA Tour as an amateur, making his debut at the FedEx St. Jude Classic. He also played at the US Open that year, but missed the cut by four shots, and at the Australian Masters where he was runner-up.
