The Elizabethan era is the famous historical period marked by the reign of Queen Elizabeth (1558-1603). This period is described as the golden age of English history because the state had never been so prosperous before. England expanded and became healthier and more optimistic than ever, so this period could be called the renaissance that inspired the nation and brought relief. Therefore, this age has great significance. Under the leadership and rule of Queen Elizabeth, the nation's prosperity increased and patriotism brought romantic spirit, youthful freshness and love themes to the field of literature, so much so that it is considered one of the splendid eras of English literature. Elizabeth herself was a great writer. and wrote poems and speeches and similarly there was a great flourishing in the field of literature in this era, especially in poetry and drama. There were great writers in this era, Thomas Kyd, Christopher Marlowe, William Shakespeare, John Donne to name a few. However, when it comes to the drama of the Elizabethan age, Shakespeare stands out from the rest of the poets and playwrights. He marked his name as one of the greatest playwrights as he was incredibly versatile. He surpassed many of the other professional playwrights of this era and was notable for his great literary works. Likewise, the Jacobean era was another era in history that refers to the reign of James VI of Scotland (1567-1625). . The Jacobean era succeeded the Elizabethan era. This era denotes the architecture, art and literature of this period. Under his rule there was a practical unification of England and Scotland which proved very important to the development and progress of both nations. In the field of literature... middle of paper... Jonson was always difficult and a little arrogant in his works. It depicted the harsh realities of life and made use of bold language. Critics and contemporaries truly loved Jonson from the bottom of their hearts or they despised and hated him. Both the playwrights of the Elizabethan and Jacobean era had the same themes in their writings but their writing style, their approaches were different and this makes them both unique in themselves. . Johnson used the simple rather than the difficult and, on the other hand, Shakespeare had been quite generous in his writing. However, the themes remained the same but the approaches were totally different. Both contemporaries were the best of their time and one must not forget that Jonson himself praised Shakespeare for his work saying the most famous lines “Shakespeare was not of an age, but for all times”.
